How to Optimize your Computer Using Simple Steps

Here are several techniques to Optimize your Computer or Make it Really Fast.

Seriously consider using the command-line. You can still tweet, instant message, play mp3 (with mplayer), browse the web (with Lynx or Links2), p2p (amulecmd), torrent (rtorrent), image edit (ImageMagick), read feeds (raggle), chat (irssi), ofm (midnight commander), manage downloads (axel, wget) and everything else. Linux and BSD make it easy to use the command-line, whereas OS X and especially Windows don't.

Below we have provided some important steps that you can perform to optimize your computer's performance and speed.

1.Remove the junk. Go to Control Panel, Add or Remove Programs, and remove applications and programs you do not use or do not need.

2.Running the Disk Cleanup Utility is a great way to make a computer faster. Go to My Computer, right click the disk you want to clean up, go to Properties. Click the button that says Disk Cleanup next to the graph demonstrating disk usage.

3.Defragment your disks. Go to Start>>All Programs>>Accessories>>System Tools, and click Disk Defragmenter.

4.Cleaning out your Prefetch folder can help as well. Go to C:\Windows\Prefetch, and clean out all the files and folders inside, and restart. Do this monthly. Do not delete the folder, just all the files inside!

5.Turn your page file higher by going to Control Panel>System>Advanced>Settings
Be sure to click the settings button that is under "Performance". Next click Advanced, then click Change. Set your page file higher, or select System Managed Size. After you have made the changes, lower the maximum size to the initial size, click set, and then restart.

6.Go back to System>>Advanced>>Settings, and mark Visual Effects to "Adjust For Best Performance". This will remove all the fancy visual effects, and change the theme back to Windows Classic.

7.On your desktop, right click, click properties, choose settings, and then change the color quality to 16 bit, or as low as it will let you set it. Also avoid huge desktop images from the internet.

8.Before performing the next step, boot in Safe Mode by restarting. When the computer turns on, immediately tap and keep tapping the F8 key, and choose Safe Mode. Choose your Windows operating system.

9.Remove any malicious content such as viruses from your PC using a virus scanner. You can use Avast Free Antivirus, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, AVG Anti-Virus  Free Edition 2012, Avira Free Antivirus etc.

10.Before proceeding, boot normally.
If you want to improve boot times, go to Start>>Run>>Type MSCONFIG in the field, press Enter or Return, and go to the BOOT.INI tab. Check NOGUIBOOT.

11.Go back to System Configuration Utility, go to Startup, and uncheck services that you might not want starting during the boot process. Warning! Disabling services that are controlled by Windows might make your computer unstable! Make sure you know exactly what services do what before you make these changes here.

12.Before doing the next step, set Windows Explorer to display the hidden files and folders by going to Control Panel>>Folder Options>>View, and check "Display Hidden Files and Folders"
Next, browse to C:\Documents and Settings\Your Name\Local Settings\Temp. Delete all the files inside. Do not delete the folder, just all the files inside

13.If you don't mind waiting around for the search companion (the dog or wizard or whatever) to finish finding your files, disable indexing on your main hard drives by going to Computer, and disabling them under your hard disks properties.

14.Remove unnecessary Windows Components by going to Control Panel>>Add or Remove Programs>>Add or Remove Windows Components. WARNING: Check the files that you want to install or keep, and uncheck those that you want to uninstall. Be very careful here, because you can remove some programs and features that you may want to keep by accident

15.Remove your internet browsing history. Most browsers allow you to do this under their options.

16.Cleaning your registry is a great way to improve the computer performance. There are several free registry cleaners on the web to choose from. Such as Uniblue Registry Cleaner You can also use a registry defragmenter to defrag your page file and registry as well.

17. Avoid desktop manipulation programs such as Stardock or Fences, as these can slow down your computer, especially if it has a low amount of RAM.

Try adding more RAM. If on XP, I recommend at least 512 MB of RAM. If on Vista, I recommend at least 1 GB, since Vista likes to suck up most of your resources.

Install all Windows updates as well as the latest service packs

If your computer is so slow it is almost completely unbearable to use, reformat your hard drive(s), and reinstall your operating system.

Note: Remember, You don't have to try All the steps to optimize your PC. By Applying Some of the above mentioned steps you can optimize your pc to great extent.
